Time to get my stuff together.

Hi Everyone.
Like many of you, I used to have grand plans which went out the window once real life started. At 19 I had it great, I worked at the mail room of the same company my dad and some other family members worked at. I had my grand plan running well. I would spend some a few years in the mail room and move up to a computer job. Anything to work on a computer and not do manual labor. I don’t have a problem with manual labor it’s just my body wasn’t made for it. I was and still am five feet tall and was eighty pounds. Now I weigh around 120 – 125. I used to have to push this huge cart miles a day. We had internal mail routes. I was the warehouse route. I would push a big cart I could barely see above around the warehouse and production areas of the office building. It was an OK job but hard on my body. I would go home sore but I put in a hard day of work.

One of the things I would deliver are these 20-40 pound suite case like things full of paper from one plant to another. Once they hit my plant I would deliver them to shipping and what they used them for I will never know. Another thing I would deliver is copy paper. Those boxes are HEAVY and at eighty pounds and five feet tall I did what ever I could to deliver them. But I used to think, I have a job and a great retirement package. My father retired at 55 years old, with 37 years of service and my plan was to retire at 55 with 35 years of service.
We would get our full retirement package early. After eight years I moved up to a computer job uploading things onto the mainframe.
I was happy and things were doing well. Then at year 22 they laid off almost my whole group. I was on second shift so I could go to school to be a graphic and web designer in another department where I worked.
Well it threw me for a loop and it was nine years ago and I am just recovering now. Now things are going OK, but I need to get my stuff together. I need to go on a budget so I can pay my bills.

My new plan as I have said earlier is to start my own business doing design on the side for extra money. I want to have everything Paid off in five years ten tops. So I can start thinking about retirement. My great pension is no more, luckily I was smart and started my 401k when I was young. So I need to make another plan and stick to it and make sure I can retire when I am sixty five. So I will make a plan and like Dave Ramsey says I will eat beans and rice and live like no one else so when I retire I can live like no one else. Or at least live OK.

Fall is coming.

Hello all.
It’s about time for fall to start where I live in Minnesota.
Usually in September and October. My Family has been members of a local car club and around that time we make a fall leaf rod run.
The car clubs route we go through southeastern Twin Cities and go south from there to Redwing. It is a beautiful drive and once in Redwing we have lunch and drive to the top of a bluff near town and you can look at the whole town from up there. From there we go north through Wisconsin. There are small towns to visit and a couple of my favorites are Stockholm Wisconsin and Haggar City Wisconsin.
Both are fun to visit. There is more to do in Stockholm and the only real reason we visit Haggar City is to go to a Drive in restaurant that has the best chicken around. We do a bit of driving but the mileage isn’t that bad, it still take a good chunk of the day because the view is so lovely. Around Redwing there is a lake that has many eagles and we just sit and watch eagles, lake and the fall colors. Also the people we travel with are a ton of fun also and sometimes we make a mystery run of it. It’s a bit like a find it game and we make many stops to answer questions on the sheet of questions and usually pick a card. At the end of the run we usually eat supper and whoever has the best poker hand gets a small trophy or something. That is my favorite car cruise because it’s fun, pretty and we are always looking for something or doing something. I’m a real introvert but this is usually a lot of fun even for me because many of these people I have known since around high school age. Most are my parents age but many of us kids do it also because it’s what we grew up doing. Much fun is always had by all. You never know until you try.

Saint Francis

Hello All.
I would like to talk a bit about saint Francis.
Most people know Francis and animals and nature.
And he did love that, but he really rebuilt the church.
Francis first heard God at a small church in San Damiano Italy.
And he heard God tell him to rebuild his church. Like most guys he took it literally. He went and got the supplies to fix the church he was in since it was so broken down, he also fixed some other churches also.

Eventually he realized that rebuilding the church was just not fixing them but making the church better and more people following the Lord. He started the Friars Minor and he and the brothers, they were also called the brothers of penance. They also devoted themselves to poverty and God. They Preached to everyone and begged for the poor. Soon many people wanted to follow him a. A woman named Clare wanted to follow him also so they were called the Poor Clares. Soon many people followed him and several were family people and couldn’t leave them to follow Francis so he created the Secular Franciscan Order or Third Order back in his time. It was made of people like you and me, people that didn’t want to be Brothers or Sister and just wanted to live out the Gospel but within family.
Jesus was a true rebel, he did things very differently than any one else.
St.Francis of Assisi was also a rebel. The Franciscans tag line is
we bring the Gospel to life.

Being a Franciscan is fun and rewarding. Our fraternity has ministries we follow. One is helping the poor, we do that several ways. One by giving money, another by filling grocery bags for a food shelf that give people thanksgiving day food. Another is helping get things for a homeless place for people to stop in and get out of the cold and have something warm to drink and get new socks and such. There are many more. Saint Francis’s spirit is everywhere. My hope is I become a better Franciscan and person. Luckily I have my Franciscan family to help me.

More Walmart

Hi All. I will be telling more Walmart stories. Some Black Friday some everyday Walmart silliness.
I will first tell you about my second black Friday. I was a veteran by now with a year under my belt. One of my managers said i would be helping to run things and over all help out at electronics.
On Thanksgiving morning I was told we had everything ready to go and were preparing for the next few days. All I remember is the SouthPark episodes where it is Black Friday on the show and the gritty head of security runs the place like a real police force. Black Friday is coming.

Thanksgiving night came and we had special deals for Thanksgiving. One was a great deal on a tablet. We also had good deals on video game systems like Xbox Ones and PlayStations. Xbox’s were in jewelry. and PS4’s were in sporting goods where they could be locked up and be sold more securely. Once the sales hit I was super busy in TV’s and video games right off the bat. I was behind the electronics counter getting Nintendo 3d systems to sell when the crowd for the tablets rushed one of the assistant managers to grab a bunch. He tried to push back the crowd but the person up front pulled back and punched him. After that people just swarmed. I slammed my hands on the counter and asked people to get back but nobody listened. The manager was taken in the office in the back to get taken care of. There was a one per person limit but that went out the door once the manager left.I was back helping people find specific deals when there was another rush for TV’s and people became angry that they couldn’t pick up their TV right there. We made them go in the back and pick them up at the dock with their slip of paper stating they get one. I talked to one of the workers that unloaded the trucks and he said people tried to stab workers to get them. The police were there already up front to make sure nobody went nuts up front by the registers. After my break I came back I saw more people being rude and mean to get the product before others and people were using their carts like cow pusher on an old fashion train. About an hour after my break all of our registers were going non stop. I was asked to go to garden department to run that register. It was only so the person that works their could get their lunch break. I said yes because I am a good worker so I went over and Immediately remembered all the extra Christmas toys were behind a barrier in the garden area. That and it was very cold because we didn’t have real walls in two parts. Just fences and a tarp on them. Being out there for an hour was not fun but at least I wasn’t there for the whole night. It was very busy and people had no patience to wait. After my hour I only had a couple more hours to go until I could go home. I spent the time back in electronics getting people set on all the sales and checking them out and getting video games. It was a long night and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

I hate Mondays

The older I get the more I hate Mondays. Monday is the busiest day of the week at work. We fill orders from Friday night to Monday. I don’t have much time to do the work I like. My favorite thing to do at work is graphic design and taking pictures and fixing them on Photoshop.

Getting up on Monday is more difficult than every other day. It’s especially bad in the winter, when it’s cold and dark.
The thing that really sucks is it doesn’t seem I have enough time on the weekend to get things done. I played double session of Pathfinder on Saturday, and then seemed to nap or chill watching tv the rest of the night.
Sunday morning I went to mass in the morning and then to eat. Got home at about 12:30 and just wanted to chill more. I should have done much more but really didn’t want to. I took another nap and watched TV. Since I took a nap I didn’t get to bed till around 11:30 pm so when the alarm woke me up at 5:00 am, I was not ready to be up.
I got up watched YouTube for a half an hour and then went up and took care of the dogs. One of my favorite parts of the day is seeing the dogs first thing in the morning. They are happy to see me and the feeling is mutual. After that I left for work and an hour commute.
Well at least it’s only Monday once a week, and tomorrow I have a picnic and a half day of work. Yeah!!

Disney Fan

Hello All.I am a self professed Disney fanatic. I love Disney. I mostly love the old Disney movies when Walt made them. But my favorite thing to do is go to Disney World. A place where an old fart like me can be a kid again. As soon as I get into Disney’s Magical Express bus stress floats away and I become happy and child like.

Right now I don’t have the money to go to Disney World but I am hoping to go around 2022-2023. But since I can’t go I am looking at Websites to see what’s going on. My favorite website is WDWInfo they have a video podcast on YouTube named THE DIS. All the content they put out is good, but their ace in the sleeve is The Dis boards. It is a place where a bunch of Disney fans to and talk about everything Disney.

My favorite park in Disney World is probably Epcot. It has good rides and the best food in any park around. Epcot is split into two sections.
The first is Future World. Where it is suppose to be a view of the future. But that view is a couple decades old and things are changing a lot lately. Then we have World Showcase where it has large pavilions of different countries. The Pavilions are really nice, many really look like the country. Like when you go to mexico you go into a Mexican pyramid. Inside the pyramid is a large shopping area, sit down restaurant and a ride. There are people from all of the countries working at the pavilions. I love it because I love to go on the rides then have lunch at a restaurant in one of the pavilions and go on more rides or just chill out and stroll through the park.

The other thing I love about Disney are the Movies and TV shows.
My favorite movies are Peter Pan, Pinocchio, Dumbo and Snow White.
The TV shows are great too, I like the old ones like Mickey Mouse Club, Herbie and more. Nothing made me more happy when Disney bought Pixar because I love Pixar movies and I was hopping the Pixar culture would leak into the Disney Culture. It did a little but not enough.

I am not a fan of all the new live action remakes. I believe Disney should be making new movies and TV shows. Luckily they bought Marvel so they could put some new movies and new ideas out. Then they bought Starwars and it started good but a little to much and the last Starwars movies wasn’t very Starwars.

I have hope things will turn around though.Things will get better hopefully but at least I have all my oldies to watch to make me happy.

Minecraft

Minecraft

In 2010 my nephew who was about 7 or 8 at the time, wanted me to play a game with him. It was a game called Minecraft.
A game of building and survival. I resisted for a couple months because I was into something else and it was not as easy to get it back then. I went to the game makers website Mojang and looked at buying it. But they were not an american company. They were way out in Sweden. You needed paypal to get it and since it was a purchase outside the USA it was a bit more difficult.

So after I bought the game I played it myself to make sure my young nephew could play it. Once we started playing we were hooked.
We were playing survival back then. I would go on YouTube and look for videos with hint’s and tips to build more and survive better. Recipes for objects were more difficult back then. I eventually found a book filled with all the recipes and tips and tricks. So my nephew and I would build and have adventures together. It really brought us closer because it was something he knew more about than me. He had a bunch of friends that played it at school and he learned much about it.

After a while we found the creative mode. A mode that would let you build anything without mining or gathering materials. That’s when things went from to a fun video game to something we could build and be creative and also be art. Eventually I bought a server so my nephew and his friends and I could build together in one place. That is when I really started watching videos and listening to podcasts about Minecraft. One of those podcasts was a show called Minecraft Me.
MinecraftMe was a audio and video podcast about Minecraft and that’s it. Chase and Joe would show us how to build and what was possible. They also had a server that people could build on.

After that my server became much better. We made much bigger projects and buildings. We made malls, office buildings, hotels and more. But eventually around 2016 or 2017 my love of Minecraft waned, but more importantly my PC died, So I couldn’t play anymore.

But earlier this year I tried playing Minecraft on my Xbox One, it wasn’t the same. I was so used to keyboard and mouse a controller was difficult to use. But I kept playing and eventually I got used to it and started building again. A month or so my nephew and his friends were on Xbox and saw me playing Minecraft and asked if they could join. Once they were on the server my nephew said it was a huge wave of nostalgia.Over the last few months I have become really in to Minecraft. They saw my map and how developed it was and were surprised. I was building on a large island and there were smaller ones nearby so I said they could have an Island to themselves.
They started building and it was like in the beginning.
Minecraft is back baby. It’s the tenth anniversary and it’s just as fun as when I started.

Video Games

There has been a lot talk of video games lately. People saying video games make you violent. I am here to say “I don’t think so”.
I am a very nonviolent person. I am very Catholic/Franciscan , and can’t say if I have ever hurt anyone.

I have been playing video games almost my whole life.
I am in my fifties, and the first video game I played at home was pong.
I love arcades, always have. But playing a video game at home is great. Not crowd, don’t have to bring a bunch of quarters. Pong was a very early game. Pong had a few modes most were very much the same.
Then a few years later at Christmas Atari 2600. That changed everything for me. We didn’t have a lot of money, so it was family entertainment. Oh and we only had one TV and it was in my Parents room. So we usually played together as a family even my parents.
After a few weeks my Dad and I were developing Atari thumb.
After about 6 months my parents bought a small 12 or 14 inch TV for the Kitchen/Dining room. We ate in our kitchen in a small table and my parents had enough of us kids coming up at 6am to watch TV and play Atari. Because when I was a kid in the 70’s and early 80’s there were a ton of Saturday morning cartoons. So by summer of that year we had a small TV and this was the kids TV. A friend and I would take any money we could get our hands on and bike to the golf course a mile or so away and spend it on video games and a coke. We would play games like Defender, Joust, Space Invaders, Tempest and more.

As I grew older the video games got better. When I graduated high school I bought myself a commodore 64. I had a job at McDonalds and most of the money went to video games. Whenever I was at a mall, I would go to the arcade called Aladdin’s Castle. Ever since I had the Atari I would ask for games for Christmas and my birthday. Eventually I played Nintendo, Sega, PlayStation, Xbox video game systems. With the commodore 64 my love of computers started.
After my commodore 64 I bought the Commodore Amiga. It was so cool because when I would look at PC games there wasn’t much color and the Amiga had really great color and after about a year I was able to buy a Mac emulator for it. After that PC’s did color better so I bought a 386 and so on and so on.

Now we have more power in our phones than my old PC’s ever did.
I have an Xbox one and a PC that has an I7, Nvidia 1060 and a super fast SSD and a terabyte hard drive. Oddly enough my favorite games were the shooters. Doom, Quake, Unreal and more. The more violent the better it seems. Now I play Rainbow Six Siege, GTAV, Red dead redemption 2 and more. With all that video game playing you think I would be violent. Nope I’m just as chill as always. Now video games help me with my stress and help me chill out. The things that get me mad now are traffic, people not being nice and people taking advantage of others. I don’t yell or scream or anything. I just hop on to a game and the stress disappears.

Gods Love

Gods love is great and it’s everywhere. God is love. He sent his only son to be human and die for us. He is like a Father. We are his children. He loves us even if we make mistakes. He is always hoping we come to him. If you look you will find him. Knock and the door will open. Know he loves you always.

Sunday’s Readings.

gospel
Photo by Arthur Miranda on Unsplash

Oh vanity of vanities. It seems both the first reading and the Gospel were about trimming down and minimizing your earthly goods.
It is one of the hardest things for me to do. Life over the last 50+ years has been about keeping up with the Jones’s. I have been super bad at that. I have been hoarding geeky things for the last 5 years or so. Actually I have been collecting things my whole life. It started with toys like HotWheels and GI Joes. Were talking the old big GI Joes.
But I was a kid and didn’t know any better. Then I found my love of comic books. Man I collected so many of those I had to get special comic long boxes to store them. And when I bought them they came with bags to put them in.

As I got older I started collecting computers and computer parts and such. I also collected video game systems and games.
Man I had to much stuff. I still have to much stuff.
I need to start getting rid of things. I’m not that old yet that I will go to the home or something. So to get it so I don’t collect so much stuff. I stopped getting LootCrate, which is a box of geeky goods. Some I loved some I didn’t. Also I am trying to not buy as much junk as before. I am buying more books and such to make me better . But I still buy to much stuff and I need to stop. Here’s hoping I win the battle of the stuff.
